NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE GREEN PARTY IN THE LONDON BOROUGH OF BRENT

UPDATED: Officer and Committee candidate statements for Brent Green Party AGM June 27th 2026

We did not get through all the Officer and Committee positions in Saturday's heat and a second round will be organised in due course. This is an updated list including where candidates have notified me that they wish to share the role.

Branch Coordinator – Harbi Farah WITHDRAWN

I am applying for the role of Coordinator/Chair to provide the structured leadership and strategic direction necessary to expand our local electoral footprint and strengthen our community presence. We have an enormous prospect to build on our recent gains. By being more ambitious, we can overcome our upcoming challenges and enter our next phase of growth.

Throughout my career, I have successfully developed long-term strategies by breaking down broad organisational goals into measurable monthly milestones. As a chairperson, I possess extensive experience steering complex meetings, ensuring agendas are strictly followed while fostering an open environment for collaborative debate. I am skilled at managing differing opinions and steering discussions toward agreed, actionable strategies. Furthermore, I am adept at motivating volunteer-led teams, delegating responsibilities effectively, and maintaining high morale during high-pressure campaigns.

If given the opportunity to serve as your Coordinator, I will deliver on three core priorities:

A 12-Month Campaign Roadmap: Target specific vulnerable local council wards to maximise electoral gains.

Structured, accessible monthly agendas: Drive member attendance and foster active participation from all members.

Community mapping: Identify and connect with local forums, activities, and organisations to expand our network.

I am fully committed to upholding the Green Party constitution and our local party rules. I will push for positive systemic changes that allow us to engage more effectively, prioritising the issues that matter most to local residents. For these reasons, and with great enthusiasm, I ask for your vote to become your next Coordinator.

Harbi Farah

Branch Coordinator – Beninio McDonough-Tranza  ELECTED

Statement for Branch Co-ordinator Position

Our local election campaign demonstrated the potential of Brent Green Party, but also showed that our organisation needs to develop if we are to sustain success. We have grown rapidly and now have hundreds of members. Our task now is to transform that base into an active political community. I would like to contribute to that as branch co-ordinator.

For me, there are four priorities: political education, sustained campaigning, building strong links between members and party structures which allow democratic participation. Political education is about developing the knowledge and commitment that allow every member to identify with the party and contribute to its collective life. A party’s strength also depends on the connections between members so we need regular opportunities to debate ideas, build social bonds and campaign together throughout the year.

Many of us have experienced political parties, like Labour, where members are mobilised only at election time while real decision-making becomes concentrated elsewhere. This causes a party to atrophy. We must sustain a genuinely democratic culture. Real party democracy requires clear procedures and transparent structures that bring members, officers and elected representatives into regular collective decision-making.

I believe I am well placed to contribute to this process because I have a longstanding commitment to Green and Socialist politics and some practical organisational experience.

I first joined the Green Party in 2010, aged 18, and was an active member until 2017. Following the 2017 election, I joined Labour because of my support for Jeremy Corbyn, before leaving in opposition to the party’s shift to the right under Starmer. Since rejoining the Greens last year, I have played a role in the local party, standing as a candidate and helping coordinate aspects of our local election campaign. Alongside party politics, I have participated in campaigns on environmental issues and the anti-war movement in both the UK and Germany. I have also written on politics and environmentalism for publications including The New Statesman, Dissent and Earth Island Journal.

Local Party Contact – Kaushik Bhattacharya ELECTED JOBSHARE

I'd like to be nominated for the officer role of Local Party Contact. Please find my statement below:

As a current officer who has already established good relationships with our elected councillors, fellow officers, and many members who I've engaged with, and having already established my name amongst many Brent based groups, organisations, and contacts, such as Brent Friends of the Earth, Brent ACE, Brent Multi-Faith Forum, Brent Parks Forum, Brent Community Libraries, amongst others, I feel this puts me in a good position to be the liaison of external enquiries needing to be discussed with the councillors, as well as local and London officers.

I will also be able to better manage my time in role around my other commitments, work and personal alike, and also make a more valuable contribution to the party with my confidence and previous experience through my work as a Producer in engaging well with external enquiries.

Hope this is a suitable statement for my interest in the role.

Local Party Contact – Erica Gbajumo ELECTED JOBSHARE

I am applying for the role of Local Party Contact. I have been active politically for nearly 20 years and previously served as a Councillor. I have previous experience of being the first point of contact for new members of those with questions for local councillors and I have a thorough understanding of community engagement.

If selected, I will approach all interactions in a calm, measured, and approachable way, ensuring that those who contact the party feel heard and supported. I am organised and reliable, and will ensure that all queries are handled promptly, efficiently, and with care.

Treasurer  Richard Walker ELECTED

Richard Walker

Statement in support of nomination for Treasurer

I am standing for the post of Treasurer again for 2026/27.  Since taking over from William Relton at the last AGM in February 2025, I have overseen a large growth in the party’s spending from small amounts to over £14,000 on the 2026 local election campaign, have established friendly relations with the national party’s finance team, and met all their reporting requirements.  I also set up the Crowdfunder that raised over £3,000 for our campaign.

If re-elected, I would like to continue to support our party’s work by making sure that members get visibility on decisions about how party funds should be spent to further our objectives, and that these decisions having been taken, are implemented.

I will continue to try to ensure that no party member doing party work is prevented from doing so by their own personal financial situation, and that party members spending their own money on agreed expenditure are promptly reimbursed.

PPERA Second Officer

Kaushik Bhattacharya ELECTED

This is a statutory requirement to keep accounts in order if the treasurer is unable to do so. It could be taken on as an additional role by one of the officers.

Election Agent/ Nominating Officer– Charlie Fernandes

I am standing for the roles of Election Agent and Nominating Officer.

I joined the Green Party in November. And the officers team in January, as a Campaign Organiser. During the election campaign, this was predominantly organising the door knocking and leafleting sessions. And promoting them through the Action Network.

I cycle and am comfortable getting around Brent and beyond by cycling. So I can flexibly meet candidates, officers and council officials to handle necessary election paperwork.

Having worked as a door to door fundraiser helped me appreciate nuances to improve engagement on the doorstep.

My paid job working with disabled cyclists has a strong sense both of tackling discrimination and enhancing active travel. The ethos of my day-to-day work I feel aligns perfectly with Green Party values.

I am a campaigner in Brent Cycling Campaign, where I have coordinated the rides programme. I've been on its Committee for over 15 years. Through this campaign and its umbrella organisation London Cycling Campaign, I've learnt campaigning tactics and strategies.

My previous work included editing newsletters for Brent's charitable and community sector. And I've coordinated talking therapies workshops for NHS Brent, liaising between NHS practitioners and host community organisations.

I'd love to continue supporting the growing ambition of the Green Party in Brent.

Bank account signatories – any three of the above.

ESSENTIAL

Political Liaison Officer – Martin Francis

I have been performing this role since the formation of the Green Group on Brent Council, latterly more formally after the local council election.

I have been a member of the Green Party since 2009 and have attended most conferences since then, becoming familiar with Green Party policies and key debates. I led a group that steered through major changes in our Education Policy regarding academies, Ofsted and testing that still stand. I am a member of the Green Party Trade Union Group and Green Left as well as ACE Brent and Friends of the Earth, and the National Education Union.

Alongside this I have edited the Wembley Matters blog that reports on local issues including the policies and activities of Brent Council. For a while in the absence of effective opposition and scrutiny it unofficially in a small way fulfilled that role. This enabled me to become familiar with council functions and committees and I have spoken at Cabinet, Scrutiny Committees and Full Council on many issues. Most recently I organised a petition and deputation to save the Welsh Harp Environmental Education Centre,

I have served as the Coordinator of Brent Green Party and Local Party Contact, as well as Nominations Officer and Election Agent.

These streams of involvement, party, community and local government all help me to perform the Political Liaison Officer role.

Campaign Organiser - Charlie Fernandes (on condition another candidate comes forward as a jobshare)

I am standing as a *job share* for the role of *Campaigns Organiser* .

I was Campaign Organiser during the local election campaign. This involved mobilising supporters to do door knocking and leafleting.

Year round campaigning is broader, focusing on various selected issues. And to develop strategies, tactics, messaging, plan direct actions, engage activists and develop allies in the community.

I am on the committee of Brent Cycling Campaign, where I have coordinated the rides programme. Through this campaign and its umbrella organisation London Cycling Campaign, I've learnt campaigning tactics and strategies and have engaged with councillors, council officers and others.

I've worked as a door to door fundraiser for Shelter, Save the Children and Amnesty International.

In my work for Wheels for Wellbeing, I coordinate and lead cycle rides for disabled people. I've helped enable disabled people to engage directly with councillors and decision makers. I engage with other organisations, developing partnerships and running stalls to engage the wider public. And I liaise with the Campaigns team for change.

I would like to share this role with another campaigner.

Social Media Officer – Roger Berlea

I am running for the Social Media Officer role again because I believe I have done an excellent job of keeping our channels active, engaging, informative, promoting local campaigns, community events, policies and any other media requests.

This is evident in the fact that the Tik Tok account is outperforming 90% of creators with a similar follower account, as well as running a successful and fun, whilst professional, Instagram account that has soared over a thousand followers.

I am incredibly passionate about this role. This is because as a recent Journalism with Public Relations graduate, I am able to use the skills I learnt in university to better the Brent Green Parties social media accounts by following the parties style guidelines and branding whilst adding a sleek and quirky twinge.

Thank you for considering me for this position. If re-elected, I will ensure I will fulfil the role to an ever fuller extent. And if another individual gets elected instead, I wish them the best to carry on the Brent Green Parties brilliant social media accounts.

Social Media Officer – Sabina Gebotys

I would like to stand for the Social Media Officer post as a backup or second officer to Roger.

I would love to use social media to increase the reach of the Brent greens. Creating both educational and relatable content to grow the image of being an approachable group who take action for their community. Being able to showcase the time, effort, skill, and dedication that happens behind the scenes is what I would like to be apart of. I've only done social media personally but do enjoy it and want to build my creative skills on the various platforms. As one of the main culture champions in my full-time job, I understand what it means to connect with people. I'm hoping to use this understanding with this post to exhibit what the Brent greens can and will do!

Please be aware, I won't be able to attend the Brent AGM on Saturday due to other commitments.

Website Officer – Ishaan Singh

I am Ishaan Singh and I would like to reprise my role as Website Officer for the Brent Green Party. I joined the Green Party in October 2025 as I was drawn by its progressive values and I wanted to be part of a strong growing political movement in the country. I was welcomed in by the kind and friendly community that is Brent Green Party (BGP) and since then I have involved myself in the party's activities. At the time, BGP had no website, a central place for potential and current members to find key information. Recognising this gap, I worked closely with digital support of Green Party to get a website set up. I then took ownership of building it out by publishing and maintaining campaign pages, candidate bios and photo pages, blog posts, information pages like the manifesto through WordPress.

During the run up to the local elections, I collaborated with 3 candidates on specific campaign pages regarding challenging the opening of adult gaming centres and stopping the rollout of Waymo vehicles in Brent (these 3 candidates are now elected as councillors). I also set up Action Network forms to support our ground campaign, including volunteer sign-ups and a posters and boards form, resulting in around 110 total sign-ups. I have also set up event pages for polling day, the AGM and other community events like litter picks.  As a result, BGP now has a functioning digital presence, a centralised platform where I have combined disparate content into one place, where members can sign up for actions and events and can view key information, with 847 unique visitors within the last 30 days.

Alongside this,  I've been actively involved in the local elections campaign, door knocking and leafletting in target wards, such as Wembley Park, Kilburn, Harlesden and Kensal Green, Brondesbury Park and Roundwood, from November 2025 until May 2026 and have participated in campaign meetings and contributions to communications. I've become proficient and comfortable with WordPress and Action Network and I would love to continue to support the Brent Green Party with digital or web needs. I want to find ways to improve the SEO of the website to improve visibility. I want to incorporate best practices from across all Green Party local websites and ensure that it aligns with the national party's standards. I want to update content across the whole website, including the campaigns section and blog posts, with up to date information about local party's activities. I will continue to collaborate with officers, councillors and members of the local party on content and incorporate feedback.

Data Officer – Ahmed Mohamed

I would like to be considered for Data Officer. I am a data and process analyst in UK financial services, where I build dashboards, automated reporting and process improvements at a regulated digital bank.

This role is a close match for my day-to-day work. I have built self-serve dashboards and reporting tools in Power BI, Tableau and Metabase that give non-technical stakeholders clear oversight of key metrics — exactly the kind of accessible reporting that would help
members and campaign organisers track our canvassing and electoral data. I am experienced in maintaining data quality, rebuilding taxonomies, and turning manual processes into reliable automated workflows, which I would apply to register updates, data backups and
polling day operations.

I am comfortable supporting app users and translating campaign needs into practical tools, and I would use statistical analysis of our canvassing and activity data to directly inform strategy and help us target winnable wards.

I am keen to put these skills to work supporting Brent Green Party's continued growth, building data infrastructure that helps us campaign smarter.

Membership Officer – Matt Paul

I would like to be considered for Membership Officer on joint basis with others as it appears there's a big job managing and engaging members and turning them into activists, and I think my experience of running and organising a trade union branch would be really useful. Specifically, analysing and using data in smarter ways (eg targeted comms, creating ward groups), forming working groups and snap polls & surveys to give lay members opportunities to get more involved, better utilising WhatsApp and bulk SMS, and formulating a strategy to grow membership and activists.

Membership Officer – Rohan Chand

I  am applying for the Membership Officer role because I am motivated by creating strong, inclusive communities and helping members feel genuinely connected to an organisation's values and mission. With extensive experience communicating across different cultures, backgrounds and industries, I am excited by the opportunity to attract, support and retain Green Party members while ensuring everyone feels welcomed, valued and engaged.

I come from a unique half-English, half-Indian background. My mother is English and my father was Indian, and I have lived and travelled extensively, giving me the ability to connect easily with people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. I conversant in English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Marathi and Punjabi, enabling me to engage with diverse communities and build strong relationships.

My professional background spans media, film, business and law, giving me a broad understanding of people, organizations and effective communication. Through these experiences, I have developed strong interpersonal skills, confidence in dealing with the public and the ability to communicate with people from all walks of life.

I am particularly skilled at conflict resolution, finding common ground between people, and helping individuals feel heard, respected and part of a team. I enjoy building positive relationships and creating inclusive environments where everyone feels able to contribute.

I  am 6'2" tall, friendly and in my early mid 50's, I am also a parent of two delightful children, aged 16 and 21, who are both passionate about environmental issues. Their commitment to sustainability and protecting the planet reinforces my own dedication to environmental stewardship and gives me a personal appreciation of the importance of engaging people of all generations in creating positive change.

Outside work, I am an enthusiastic sailor, cricketer, swimmer and scuba diver, activities that have strengthened my teamwork, resilience and leadership skills. I also have a background in permaculture, and environmental stewardship is paramount in my life. I am always updating myself with various courses and zoom calls on various current environmental issues.  This has given me a deep appreciation for sustainable living, community engagement and the importance of protecting the natural world, values that strongly align with those of the Green Party.

I believe my passion, communication skills, multicultural background, language abilities and talent for bringing people together would allow me to make a valuable contribution to the Green Party and help attract, support and retain members.

Best regards,

Rohan Chand

Membership Officer  - Michael Martins Menezes

I'm submitting my application for the role of Membership Officer for the Brent Green Party.

I hold it important to engage and develop this party within the borough of Brent as a direct and essential part of establishing Green Party ideas and policy to the wider consciousness. The role comes with several responsibilities that are essential for that goal and I will be committed to assist this local party in their internal engagement with their local party members.

Helping the party with fulfilling reports, providing a welcoming environment along with communicating with our members, supporters and volunteers are tasks that I hope to do at any time within the local party either I am within a role such as this or as a stand alone member. Working alongside people who hold an importance toward the same things that I hold especially with the local Green Party is essential to the tasks in this role.

I hope that with the work of anyone who is a Membership Officer is a vital piece of grassroots organising in the local party and as a stable brick to build along with all other officer roles.

Equalities Officer

Anthony Ethapemi self nomination for equalities officer.

As Green Party member and recent local election candidate for Willesden Green Ward, I wishes to be considered for the position of Equalities Officer.

As a Black person that has experienced discrimination and social injustice of all forms,I believe that I am well placed to recognise discrimination and social injustice on an individual and class level, and ready to call out the unfair treatment of people, be they persons of colour, or based on their sexuality, disability, religious beliefs etc.

With due regard to the equality act of 2010, I am prepared to raise any issues of concern on the Green Party chat and at group meetings.
Hoping for your support.

Youth Officer – Muhammad Sayed (Prepared to job share with the other candidate)

I’m putting myself forward for Youth Officer because there is an opportunity to connect Green politics with the everyday experiences of young people in Brent, and I want to help seize it.

I’m a UCL student involved with the Green Party and Amnesty societies on campus.

Canvassing and leafleting in Wembley Park Ward ahead of the local elections gave me first hand experience of grassroots campaigning and the value of listening to communities directly.

As a brand ambassador at my university and a researcher for think tanks, I’ve built strong communication and strategy skills through developing messaging and turning ideas into

campaigns that land. I aim to create spaces for political engagement that young people actually show up for and build outreach that reflects how they engage with issues today. As a relatively new member, I’m close enough to the experience of being outside the Green Party to know what it takes to bring someone in.

Brent’s growing Green representation has been inspiring to see, but sustaining that momentum means bringing more young people in. I’ve seen both the appetite for engagement and the gaps in how it’s being channelled, and I want to help close it.

Youth Officer – Gabe Joseph (Prepared to job share with the other candidate)

I have lived my entire life in the borough, and have the whole time been interested in positive social change. I have experience in political campaigning and organising, being Team Lead of Green New Deal Rising North London and helping to organise a number of successful actions, one of which was reported on in the Big Issue. I have also got experience facilitating group events, both at school events and political ones such as helping facilitate a table at a citizens assembly. Citizens assemblies being just one of the things I would love to do to enhance youth engagement in the borough. I am extremely passionate about the Green Party, demonstrated through my door knocking multiple times a week during the campaign period. I am extremely passionate about socialism, about the need for change, and engaging young people. My experiences with autism, being queer, being Jewish and having mental health issues also lend me the ability to understand a wide range of experiences, enhancing my ability to politically communicate and to engage sensitively with the broad range of our community. I have good connections across the regional party, having a close working relationship with The Camden Greens Youth officer, enabling collaboration, and more broadly in the London Young Greens, knowing a number across London and in the exec.

Trade Union Liaison Officer – James Rossi (Prepared to job share with the other candidate)

Trade Union Liaison Officer. I didn't realise I needed to write 200 words about why I should get the position. With regards to the Union position, the senior lead Rep in London Gavin Dudley with GMB and the lead officer Steve Garelick also GMB both know how much I have changed London buses through Union Activism and hard work, and how much I continue to influence things for the better in the industry. Gavin has made no secret of the fact that he wants me as his number two, and sees me as a key player in continuing to improve London buses for the working Drivers. I have spent years working with Unite the Union to build and improve things in the London bus industry. I've been a member of RMT and many in RMT and Unite know my name or know me. I was a member of the Renters Union and have utilised Unite Community in many of the industrial disputes, I was a strong advocate for Sharon Graham the General Secretary of Unite the Union. As Bob Crow famously said if you fight you might Win, but if you don't fight you will definitely lose... I'm a fighter for the working class and the workers I'm not left not right I'm a true socialist in every aspect. I will stand up for what's right no matter what the cost. I will fight for the people who drive the buses, sweep the streets, care for the elderly. Etc etc we must stop Reform and we must stand together as one nation one people 💪💪💪

I hope you will consider giving me the opportunity and chance to make the difference,

DESIRABLE

London Regional Green Party delegate (more than one is possible) – Ahmed Ahmed

(The London Region at present is only meeting as officers and other arrangements are pending. I suggest  we go ahead with this election so that we have delegates ready - Martin Francis)

I would like to submit my nomination for the position of London Regional Green Party Delegate at the forthcoming AGM.

My supporting statement is below:

I would like to stand for the position of London Regional Green Party Delegate.

Since joining the Green Party, I have become increasingly involved in community organising, local campaigning and engaging with residents across Brent. Through this work, I have seen first-hand the importance of strong collaboration between local parties and the wider London Green Party in sharing ideas, supporting campaigns and building an effective movement for positive change.

As a community organiser and transport planning professional, I bring experience of stakeholder engagement, partnership working and representing diverse viewpoints. I am passionate about ensuring that the voices of Brent members are heard at regional level and that lessons, opportunities and best practice from across London are shared back with our local party.

If elected, I will seek to be an active and constructive representative, supporting communication between Brent and the London Green Party, promoting member engagement and helping strengthen our collective impact across the capital.

I would be honoured to serve as Brent's London Regional Green Party Delegate and contribute to the continued growth and success of our party.

Local Regional Green Party Delegate – Erica Gbajumo

I am applying to serve as a London Regional delegate. If selected, I will be a clear, reliable communicator who listens carefully, represents views fairly, and reports back openly so members stay informed and involved.

I’m passionate about strengthening our local party—growing membership, supporting campaigns, and ensuring members’ voices are heard at regional level.

I am enjoying being part of Brent Green Party and will work to build momentum for positive change. As a delegate, I will raise the issues that matter to us, share insights from regional meetings, and help connect Brent to the wider Green network.

Events Manger – Michaela Lichten

As a long time Green supporter I'd like to apply for the position of Event Manager for the Brent Green Party.

I have a strong background in planning and delivering community and arts events, from running comedy nights and hosting regular quiz evenings to organising larger public events. I've worked with the SOS Brent Libraries campaign delivering events and a legacy art installation for the Preston Community Library.

I was a Trustee of the Kilburn Festival and was instrumental in establishing the London Bridge Festival, which later evolved into the London Fringe. I also worked at The China Exchange, a venue that hosted a wide range of events including political talks, exhibitions, fashion shows and community gatherings, working as part of a team and giving me experience of working on diverse programmes with different stakeholders.

I see the role of Event Manager as having two complementary aims.

Firstly, it is about creating opportunities for members to come together, build relationships, celebrate achievements and strengthen the sense of community that sustains an active local party. Well-organised and fun events help retain members, welcome newcomers and recognise the hard work of volunteers.

Secondly, it is about delivering engaging public events that reflect Green values. and are inclusive, environmentally responsible and rooted in the local community. All with the aim of increasing our visibility, attracting new supporters and providing opportunities for meaningful conversations about the issues that matter in Brent.

I'm used to working collaboratively with volunteers, committees and external partners, I enjoy bringing people together around a shared purpose. I'd like to use these skills  to help the Brent Green Party build a varied and welcoming events programme that supports both our members and our wider campaigning objectives.

Sincerely
